PhD students from the University of Mainz prepared the 2nd PANDOWAE Young Scientists Summer School from 6 to 8 July 2009. We wanted to follow the idea of the meetings to give PhD Students and PostDocs an opportunity to gain new knowledge in a relaxed environment.
We visited the DWD (German Weather Service), where we listened to lectures on data assimilation and ensemble systems at the DWD. We also visited the forecast centre. The professors from Mainz gave us lectures on Rossby wave theory (Volkmar Wirth) and diabatic processes (Heini Wernli), and PostDoc Claus-Jürgen Lenz presented us some verification methods. We also had a tutorial on paper writing. As a difference to the first summer school, the most of us presented our work in a poster session instead of a talk. Although our programme was quite full we also took us some time to visit the city of Mainz.
Our meeting in Mainz gave us a lot of new knowledge, enabled us to exchange ideas and methods that we use, and again pointed out our wish to cooperate with each other and we are thankful that PANDOWAE gives us a chance for it.
